BANGKOK, Thailand - Washington State center Aron Baynes registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in Australia's 81-79 men's basketball loss to Korea in the opening game for both teams at the World University Games, Tuesday.

Baynes's points and rebounds were both game-highs. A native of Cairns (pronounced CANS), Australia, Baynes is one of two Cougars competing at the World University Games. Thomas Abercrombie will compete for his native New Zealand beginning with a 6:30 p.m. tip, Tuesday against Canada.

Korea jumped to a 7-2 lead five minutes into the game and used a 14-0 run to increase its advantage to 43-26 late in the second quarter.

Australia trailed 48-34 at intermission before pulling within 62-56 late in the third quarter on the strength of an 8-0 spurt.

Korea sealed the win by connecting on 80 percent (15-for-20) of its free throws and 48 percent (13-for-27) of its 3-point attempts.

Baynes was a force inside and led the Australians to a 46-24 points in the paint advantage and a 35-27 edge on the boards.

Australia will complete preliminary action against Israel, Friday at 1:45 p.m. PDT.
