PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Freshman outfielder Jay Miller hit a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Washington State to a 3-1 win against Lewis-Clark State Tuesday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Brett Beetham (2-1) pitched two perfect innings of relief to record the win for WSU (13-26). Tim Petke (5-1) allowed three runs and six hits in the losing effort for LCSC (30-10).
The Cougars had just six hits, but Miller and Justin Hart had two each. Jonathan Fender and Jeremy Farrar recorded the other WSU hits. The Warriors were held to seven hits, led by Paul Gallegos' two, a single and a double.
LCSC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, when Gallegos's single to right field off Cougars starter Tony Banaszak plated Tyler Best.
Banaszak threw six innings, allowing just one run and six hits, before being replaced by Garrett Alwert in the seventh. Banaszak worked out of the jam in the fifth, finally retiring Jose Rodriguez for the third out, while stranding runners at first and third.
After Hart's leadoff double in the first, Petke retired 17 straight batter, a string Hart would snap with a single in the sixth.
The Cougars had an opportunity to tie the game in the seventh, when Miller led-off the inning with a double. But he was left stranded at third base and WSU came away with nothing.
In the bottom of the eighth, Bruce Jacobsen flied out to left field to lead off the inning. Robert Stahlke, who was pinch-hitting for Brandon Reddinger, was then hit by a pitch. Fender and Farrar then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. After Hart flied out, Miller followed with a bases-clearing double to right centerfield.
In the Warrior ninth and a runner at first, Emerson Frostad hit a liner down the right field line that WSU first baseman Steve Mortimer dived and snared. Mortimer stepped on first and threw to second for a double play. Beetham then got Marc Kaiser to ground-out the second base to end the game.
The Cougars return to Pac-10 play this weekend, beginning a three-game set at Arizona State Friday. First pitch at Packard Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. WSU is expected to send Aaron MacKenzie to the mound.
