TEMPE, Ariz. -- - Washington State surrendered 21 hits in a 21-0 road loss to Arizona State in Pacific-10 Conference action Friday night at Packard Stadium.
Aaron MacKenzie (3-4) pitched five innings for WSU (13-27 overall, 4-9 Pac-10), allowing six runs and six hits in the losing effort. Beau Vaughan threw six innings, allowing three hits and no runs in notching the win for the Sun Devils (40-9, 8-5).
The Sun Devils led just 4-0 after five innings, before exploding for 12 in the bottom of the sixth. ASU sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning, getting seven hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitches in the inning. The Sun Devils added one run in the seventh and four in the eighth.
WSU had its best scoring opportunities early in the game.
In the top of the second, Bruce led-off the inning with a triple. Steve Mortimer followed with a strike-out, but then Jon Baeder walked. Vaughan, though, got the next two batters out to end the Cougar threat.
In the fourth, WSU wasted another opportunity. After Bruce doubled with one out, Mortimer walked, but Bruce was thrown out at third base and Baeder grounded out to second base.
The two teams resume their series tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Cougars are expected to send Bryce Chamberlin to the mound.
