Final Stats

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior Mike Gilbert collected four hits and the Cougars scored 10 unanswered runs as Washington State defeated San Jose State, 10-3, Friday evening at Municipal Stadium.

With the victory the Cougars snap a two-game skid and improve to 7-5 overall. San Jose State, which captured the series-opener Thursday night, falls to 11-6.

The Spartans had no answer for Gilbert as he collected four hits, including two doubles, drove in three, scored three and drew a walk. He finished the game hitting .455 for the season with a .727 slugging percentage.

The Cougars took the lead for good in the fifth as Scott Suttmeier and Gilbert connected for back-to-back singles. Following a fielder's choice off the bat of Jared Prince, Suttmeier came home of a balk by Spartan starter Loren Moneypenny, giving WSU a 5-4 advantage.

San Jose State jumped out early as the first six batters reached base of Cougar starter Matt Way. Four singles sandwiched around two hit batters produced three runs in the inning for the Spartans. WSU answered back in the second as Jeff Miller's two-out single got things going. Gilbert followed with a walk and Zach Borba doubled both home, cutting the Cougar deficit to one run at 3-2.

Leading off the fourth Cougar slugger Jim Murphy connected for his first home run of the season, a shot to center that tied the game at 3-3. Freshman Cody Bartlett had an RBI double in the sixth and Gilbert added three more in the seventh with a bases-clearing double. WSU closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the ninth as Jeff Miller drilled a one-out home run to left; his second of the season, and Bartlett added an RBI single for the first multi-RBI game as a Cougar.

For the game the Cougars collected 15 hits as in addition to Gilbert, Suttmeier and Borba each had three, along with three RBIs, and Miller added two hits.

After the slow start Way righted himself as he allowed just one hit and a walk over the next four innings. He fanned seven on the night allowing the three runs on five hits as he picked up the win to improve to 2-1 for the season. Humes worked the final four innings to pick up his third save of the season. The left-handed sophomore did not allow a hit or a walk and finished with three strikeouts.

"The last eight innings we played about as well as we can," said WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut. "Mike Gilbert gave us a big lift and he really swung the bat well tonight. (Saturday) is a big game for us and we'll be ready."

Moneypenny, one of five Spartan pitchers on the night, suffered the loss as he allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings of work.

The rubber game of the series will be played Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Saturday's game, originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, was moved up an hour to accommodate the Cougars travel plans. First pitch is now set for noon.
