LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Wayne Daman Jr. threw seven strong innings and Paul Gran added three RBIs as Washington State defeated USC 5-4 in the opening game of a Pacific-10 Conference series Friday evening at Dedeaux Field.
The win was the fourth straight for Washington State (21-18, 4-9), and third straight conference victory, while the Trojans fall to 21-22 overall, 4-9 in Pac-10 play.
The Cougars led 5-3 entering the ninth as Ross Humes came on to start the inning. A walk and single put runners at the corners before a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matt Cusick cut the lead to 5-4. Humes then buckled down, striking out Spencer Pabst and getting Grant Green to ground out to end the game. It was Humes ninth save of the season, in nine attempts, and moved him alone into second place on WSU's single-season list.
Washington State scored the game's first run when Greg Lagreid's two-out single to right plated Gran, who led off the inning with a double to right-center.
In the fifth Gran connected for a two-out, three-run home run deep over the left field fence. It was his second home run of the season and gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead halfway through the contest.
The Trojans made it a one-run game at 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth as they put up three unearned runs. Back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and a throwing error by Daman on a sacrifice attempt loaded the bases with no outs. An infield single by Cusick, sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Lucas Duda plated the three runs.
WSU was in a golden position to increase its lead with runners at the corners and no outs in the seventh. USC starter Brad Boxberger got an infield pop-up and a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning still trailing by one at 4-3.
Daman ended his night after seven innings, allowing three runs, all unearned, on eight hits as he improved to 3-3 this season. Steve Kost did not allow a hit as he worked the eighth before giving way to Humes to start the ninth.
Offensively Gran and Coulter each had three hits to lead a 12-hit Cougar attack. Gran has been the hottest Cougar of late, hitting .517 (15-29) with nine RBIs in that stretch.
Boxberger suffered the loss and he falls to 3-3 after going seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts. Pabst was the only Trojan with more than one hit, going 2-for-5 on the night.
These same two teams continue the three-game series Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
