CORVALLIS, Ore. -- - Washington State pounded out 14 hits in an 11-4 win at Oregon State Sunday in Pac-10 Conference action at Goss Stadium.
Garrett Alwert (1-1) threw 4.1 innings in relief of starter Aaron MacKenzie, allowing just one run and four hits in notching the win for WSU (11-24 overall, 3-6 Pac-10). Nathan Pendley (0-2) tossed one inning in relief, allowing three runs and two hits in the losing effort for OSU (16-17, 3-6).
The start of the game was delayed nearly an hour because of rain. There was also another 30-minute delay after the second inning.
At the plate, the Cougars were keyed by the trio of Jay Miller, Jeff LaRue and Dustin Realini. All collected three hits, while LaRue and Realini each had three RBI and Miller two. Grant Richardson hit his team-leading sixth-home run for WSU, a two-run shot in the eighth.
The Cougars fell behind early, spotting the Beavers one run in the bottom of the first and three in the second, trailing 4-0. But WSU would then score in each of the game's final six innings.
In the top of the third, the Cougars pushed two runs across. LaRue's double to left field plated Wes Falkenborg from second base. Then, with two outs, Realini singled to left, scoring LaRue.
WSU tied the game in the fifth. Derek Bruce doubled home Miller from second. After Richardson reached on an error, one of two OSU committed in the inning, LaRue singled to left field, scoring Bruce. Richardson was thrown out at the plate on the play, ending the inning.
The Beavers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Cougars notched two runs in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. With Realini and Jeremy Farrar aboard after being hit by pitches, Miller singled to plate both runners.
WSU took its first lead of the game in the seventh when LaRue singled home Richardson. Later in the inning, Realini's ground-out to shortstop allowed Falkenborg to score from third, giving WSU an 8-6 lead.
In the eighth, the Cougars went ahead 10-6 on Richardson's shot to centerfield that plated Farrar. OSU added a run in the eighth, closing the gap to 10-7.
WSU added an insurance run in the ninth, when Realini's double to right field brought home Jon Baeder. Alwert then pitched a perfect ninth to wrap-up the win.
The Cougars return home next week for a three-game series with Arizona. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. Thursday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
