SPOKANE, Wash. -- - Four Washington State errors led to eight unearned runs for Gonzaga as the Bulldogs recorded a 10-1 non-conference baseball win over the Cougars Tuesday at August/A.R.T Park.
Garrett Alwert (0-1) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits in the losing effort for the Cougars (9-23). It was Alwert's first start and fourth appearance of the season. He had pitched just 2.2 innings prior to Tuesday. Matt Reding (1-0) went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits in notching the win for the Bulldogs (14-16-1).
At the plate, five different Cougar players had hits in the contest. Gonzaga second baseman Eric Rodland broke the school record for career hits, picking up two against WSU, to surpass Jim Parnell's previous record of 242 hits. Rodland now has 243 career hits. Marshall Bratton led the Bulldogs with three hits and three RBI.
Gonzaga got out to an early lead, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
In the third inning the Bulldogs scored eight runs on seven hits, chasing Alwert from the game, tagging the Cougar pitcher with five runs. Only one was earned, however, as the Cougars committed three errors in the inning. Karl Mejlholm came into replace Alwert and surrendered four runs, none earned. James Freeman replaced Mejlholm to get the inning's final out.
Freeman allowed just one run, in the bottom of the fifth, and no hits in 2.1 innings. Jamin Svendsen threw the final three innings for WSU, allowing just one hit in his appearance.
The Cougars return to Pac-10 play Friday, when they travel to Oregon State to open a three-game series. First pitch at Coleman Field is scheduled for 5 p.m.
