Final Stats

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Freshman Josh Ashenbrenner had four hits to lead an 18-hit Cougar attack as Washington State University picked up its first win of the season with a 12-10 victory over Cal State Northridge Saturday afternoon at Matador Field.

The win evens WSU's record at 1-1 while the Matadors fall to 8-5.

The Cougars scored all 12 of their runs in the first six innings as six different players had at least two hits on the afternoon. Ryan Krauser opened the game with a double to center then came home two outs later on an RBI single by Jim Murphy. Two more runs in the second followed by a four-run third extended the WSU lead to 7-1.

In the third, WSU had two outs and nobody on before five straight hits produced the four-run inning. Jeff Miller and Simi Reynolds had back-to-back singles followed by a Greg Lagreid double that brought home Reynolds from second. Ashenbrenner followed with an RBI single to center and Zach Borba added WSU's fifth hit of the inning, a single up the middle.

The Matadors cut the lead in half in their half of the third, chasing Cougar starter Matt Way in the process. With one run already in and the bases loaded, Ross Humes came on in relief of Way. Humes retired his first batter before Jason Dabbs lined a two-run double, making it a 7-4 WSU lead. It was one of five hits on the afternoon for Dabbs.

Humes then buckled down, getting out of the third without further damage then working four straight scoreless innings before leaving in the eighth.

WSU increased its lead in the fifth with three more runs courtesy of a Matador error and a two-run single off the bat of Jared Prince. In the sixth two more Cougar runs extended the lead to 12-4 as Lagreid had an RBI single and Krauser's sacrifice fly one out later that scored Lagreid.

Cal State Northridge made it interesting with four runs in the eighth, the big blow coming on Dabb's two-run home run. Freshman Connor Lambert entered, making his Cougar debut in relief of Humes with two outs and a runner on third. Lambert induced Friday's hero C.J. Lambert into a fly out to left, ending the inning. Prince worked the ninth inning, allowing three hits and two runs, one earned.

"It was a good win, a little hairy towards the end, but a good win," said WSU head coach Donnie Marbut. "Ross Humes threw well as he came in and shut the door when they had some momentum.

"We had 18 hits and scored 12 runs, but I think we can do more offensively, swing the bat a little better," continued Marbut, referencing WSU's 12 men left on base.

For the game Ashenbrenner led the way with four hits and three runs scored, while Lagreid had two hits, two runs and two RBIs and Jeff Miller added three hits.

Humes picked up the win, working 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

For the Matadors, Dabbs went 5-for-5 on the day with four RBIs and two runs scored. Jorge Andrade, Jr. added three hits and John Parham had a pair of RBIs. Cal State Northridge struggled defensively, coming four errors that led to seven unearned runs. Starter Jimmy Jolicoeur suffered the loss, going five innings while allowing 10 runs on 13 hits with six strikeouts. He was one of five Matador pitchers on the day.

WSU concludes its series against the Matadors with a Sunday afternoon contest. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
