CORVALLIS, Ore. - Simi Reynolds had three hits and Ross Humes picked up his 12th save of the season as Washington State University defeated defending national champion and No. 11 Oregon State 5-4 Friday evening at Goss Stadium.
The win snapped a seven-game skid against Oregon State and was the first victory for the Cougars in Corvallis dating back to Apr. 13, 2003, an 11-7 win.
Cougar starter Wayne Daman Jr. worked into the sixth inning before giving way to Steve Kost with one run in and a runner on. Kost came on to strike out Drew George, ending the inning as WSU took a 5-4 lead into the seventh. That began a strong effort by the Cougar bullpen.
Nick Cebula entered with one out in the seventh and worked 1 2/3 innings on scoreless relief without surrendering a hit before giving way to Humes to start the ninth. Humes worked a perfect final inning, extending his single-season saves record, striking out one along the way.
The Cougars struck early, scoring a run in the top of the first, though it could have been more. Reynolds doubled home Paul Gran from first with one out. WSU then loaded the bases with still one out before Beaver starter Mike Stutes recorded a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning surrendering only the one run.
The Beavers answered in the bottom of the third as Chris Hopkins tripled home Koa Kahalehoe, then scored on Darwin Barney's sacrifice fly to center to cut the Cougar lead to 3-2.
Paul Gran increased the Cougar lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth with a solo home run to left leading off the inning. It was Gran's fourth home run of the season. In the sixth WSU manufactured a run as Zach Borba walked, was sacrificed to second, stole third, then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Travis Coulter.
After the first the Beavers answered every Cougar run with one of their own in the bottom of the inning. In the fifth Barney had an RBI single to right and in the sixth Mike Lissman's single scored Mitch Canham to close out Oregon State's scoring.
In addition to Reynolds' three hits, Suttmeier finished with two and a pair of RBIs while Bartlett and Prince each added two hits. Daman picked up the victory to improve to 4-4 on the season.
Stutes suffered the loss for the Beavers as he falls to 9-3 this season. Lissman and Joey Wong each had two hits to lead the Oregon State.
These same two teams continue their three-game Pacific-10 Conference series Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
