PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State pounded out a season-high 20 hits in a 17-11 win against Sacramento State Friday in non-conference baseball action at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Garrett Alwert (2-4) tossed 4.1 innings in relief, allowing nine hits and six runs notching the win for WSU (16-31). Starter Dan Smith (4-2) threw 2.2 innings, surrendering seven hits and nine runs in the losing effort for the Hornets (30-22).

WSU's 20 hits were the most in two seasons. Jay Miller led the Cougars at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a game-high four RBIs. Miller also had two doubles. Grant Richardson, Derek Bruce and Bruce Jacobsen each had three hits. Richardson hit his team-leading 12th home run of the season, solo shot in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was his fifth consecutive game with a homer. Jacobsen finished one triple shy of a cycle, while Justin Hart, Steve Mortimer and Collin Henderson added two hits each. Five Hornet players had multi-hit games.

WSU fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first, but fired back with three runs in its half of the frame. With two outs and the bases loaded, Bruce tripled to center field, clearing the bases and giving the Cougars a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Jacobsen's lead off homer to left field, his second of the season, extended the WSU lead to 4-2.

Sacramento State added a run in the top of the third, but the Cougars then pushed five runs across in the bottom half of the inning, taking 9-3 lead.

Richardson led off the frame with a single. After Jeff LaRue flied out, Bruce singled. Jon Baeder was then hit by a pitch. After Jacobsen fouled out, Henderson reached on an error by Hornet shortstop Everet Rincon, allowing Richardson to score. Hart followed with a single that plated Bruce and Baeder. Miller then added a double, plating Henderson and Hart.

The Hornets added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, cutting the WSU lead to 9-5. The Cougars responded with a four-run fifth, taking a 13-5 edge. With Jacobsen aboard with a lead off single, Henderson doubled to left center field, plating Jacobsen. Following Hart's sacrifice bunt, Miller singled, scoring Henderson. Mortimer followed with an RBI triple that brought Miller home. Richardson then singled home Mortimer.

Sacramento State scored two more in the sixth, but again, WSU had an answer in the bottom of the inning, adding an RBI single by Miller that scored Jacobsen, extending the Cougar lead to 14-7.

The Hornets added a run in the seventh, while Richardson responded with his blast over the left field wall.

The Cougars completed their scoring in the eighth, adding two more runs on a two-out double to right field by Mortimer, which scored Henderson and Hart. Sacramento State added three runs in the ninth to complete the scoring.
