Final Stats

PULLMAN, Wash. - Bradley Boyer's RBI double in the eighth inning gave the Huskies a two-run lead and a Cougar rally in the ninth came up a run short as Washington completed a three-game sweep of Washington State, 6-5, in a Pacific-10 Conference game Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.

With the loss the Cougars fall to 13-10 overall, 0-3 in Pac-10 play while the Huskies improve to 14-9, 3-0 in conference action.

With the score tied at 4-4 entering the eighth, Joey Dunn led off with a triple to center then scored one out later on a soft single past a drawn-in infield off the bat of Michael Burgher. Boyer followed with a double to deep left, scoring Burgher for the 6-4 lead.

In the ninth the Cougars capitalized on a Boyer error to lead off the inning and had runners at first and second with two outs for Jim Murphy. On a 1-1 pitch, Murphy singled to right, his third hit of the game, scoring Travis Coulter from second. WSU could not find the equalizer as Nick Hagadone retired the next batter for his fifth save of the season, preserving the 6-5 win.

The Cougars trailed 4-0 after three innings before getting on the scoreboard. In the fourth Zach Borba's single to left brought home Paul Gran and Murphy, cutting the Husky lead in half. One inning later WSU tied the game courtesy of a two-base error by Husky pitcher Tyler Cheney. Scott Suttmeier led off the inning with a single before Gran lined a single off the pitcher. On the play Cheney threw wide of first, allowing Suttmeier to score while Gran advanced to third. One out later, Gran scored on a wild pitch, tying the game.

In a game that started four hours late due to rain, the Huskies opened the scoring in the second inning when Michael Burgher's two-out single scored Jake Rife from second base. It continued a trend from Saturday's game in which the Huskies scored seven runs with two-out hits. Three more runs in the third extended the lead to 4-0 as Danny Cox had a two-run double and Joey Lind added an RBI single.

WSU had a chance in the seventh to take its first lead as the bases were loaded and one out with Murphy at bat. Murphy smashed a line drive to short where Cox knocked the ball down and after locating the ball, tagged Suttmeier who was off second then tossed to the bag for a force out, getting the inning-ending double play.

Freshman Connor Lambert started for WSU and allowed four runs on seven hits in his three innings of work. Michael Ratigan came on to start the fourth and worked 3 1/3 strong innings, allowing no runs on three hits. Steve Kost, the third of four pitchers on the day, suffered the loss as he allowed one run on one hit in 2/3 innings of work.

Offensively Murphy led the way with a season-high three hits while Suttmeier, Gran, Borba and Cody Bartlett each added two.

Washington was led by Boyer's three hits while Cox and Burgher each had two with two RBIs. Brandon McKerney, who worked the seventh inning for Washington, picked up his first win of the year.

The Cougars return to the diamond Tuesday as they begin a two-game home series against Brigham Young University at Bailey-Brayton Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
