PULLMAN, Wash. - Mike Petrowski threw eight strong innings and Jonathan Leise connected for a two-run home run as Rider University opened the three-game series with a 4-1 victory over Washington State Sunday evening at Bailey-Brayton field.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 8-6 on the season while Rider improved to 2-5 overall.
Petrowski stymied the Cougar bats all evening, allowing just three hits while registering four strikeouts. He gave way to James Hayes to start the ninth and after two quick outs, Hayes found himself in trouble. Back-to-back singles by Jim Murphy and Jeff Miller, followed by a four-pitch walk to Mike Gilbert, loaded the bases for Simi Reynolds. With the tying run on first, Reynolds grounded back to the pitcher, ending the game.
WSU starter Connor Lambert was matching Petrowski through five innings as the Cougar freshman had surrendered two hits and struck out six. Leading off the sixth Rider right fielder Brad States lined a ball up the middle that hit Lambert in the head, deflecting over the head of Cougar first baseman Jim Murphy for a double. Lambert was forced to leave the game as Seth Harvey came on in relief.
James Hayes, the first batter to face Harvey, greeted the freshman with a double down the line in right, scoring States with the games first run. A sacrifice bunt and an RBI groundout off the bat of Jeff Reynolds pushed the Broncs lead to 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth. Rider extended its lead in the seventh as Jonathan Leise connected for a two-run home run over the wall in left, his first home run of the season.
The Cougars found the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth as pinch-hitter Greg Lagreid singled home Gilbert from second base. WSU had the tying run at the plate with two outs before Petrowski retired Scott Suttmeier to get out of the inning.
Murphy finished the game with two of the Cougars' five hits. Gilbert's third-inning single, the first Cougar hit of the game, was his sixth consecutive hit over the past three games and pushed his season average to .539.
Lambert suffered the hard-luck loss and saw his record fall to 1-1 as he allowed one run on three hits. Entering that sixth inning Lambert had thrown 14 consecutive scoreless innings over his last three appearances. Harvey allowing three runs on three hits in two innings while Jayson Miller allowed three hits and no runs in his two innings of work.
Rider collected nine hits on the night, two each by Matt McCollum, States and Leise. Petrowski improved to 2-0 this season with the win while Hayes earned his first save.
These same two teams meet again Monday evening in the second of the three-game series at Bailey-Brayton Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
