PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga junior Shawn Wayt blasted a three-run home run to cap a five-run Gonzaga sixth inning as the Bulldogs rallied past Washington State 12-6 in nonconference baseball, Tuesday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The Bulldogs (21-16) entered the sixth inning trailing 6-4. Cougar relieved Steve Kost (1-3) loaded the bases with a pair of walks sandwiched around an infield single. After Kost struck out Ryan Wiegand and Dustin Colclough, Gonzaga's Aaron McGuinness tied the game with a two-run single to right field. Wayt followed with his first career home run well over the fence in left centerfield.
Gonzaga's rally made a winner out of Jeremy Stumetz (2-1) who pitched five shutout innings and held the Cougars to two hits. The Bulldogs' southpaw retired the last 10 WSU hitters he faced.
Washington State (16-14) built a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Gonzaga starter Chris Highmark. With one out, Scott Suttmeier and Jared Prince singled and executed a double steal to put runners at second and third. Jim Murphy followed with a two-run double down the left field line. Paul Gran reached on a bunt single to move Murphy to third. After Gran stole second, Greg Lagreid lifted a fly ball that fell just inside the left field line for a double scoring Murphy and sending Gran to third. Jeff Miller's ground out scored Murphy to cap the rally.
Gonzaga pulled even with four runs in the third inning off Connor Lambert. With one out, Michael Rhodes reached on an infield single and Evan Wells bunted for a hit to put runners at first and second. Bryan Winston doubled down the left field line to score Rhodes and Darin Holcomb delivered a two-run double in the left field corner to pull the Bulldogs within 4-3. Following a walk and an out, McGuinness plated Holcomb with a single to tie the game at 4.
The Cougars regained the lead at 6-4 with a pair of runs in their half of the third inning. Gonzaga reliever CJ McClure balked in the go-ahead run and Jeff Miller added a tally with a double down the right field line.
Gonzaga put the game out of reach with a three-run ninth inning. Winston drove in a run with an infield single to increase the Bulldogs' lead to 10-6. A throwing error by WSU catcher Greg Lagreid and a RBI-single by Wiegand capped the scoring.
