PULLMAN, Wash. -- - The UCLA Bruins struck early and never looked back in handing host Washington State a 21-3 Pacific-10 Conference baseball loss Friday evening at Bailey Brayton Field.

WSU (18-36 overall, 6-16 Pacific-10 Conference) starter Bryce Chamberlin (4-6) suffered the loss, with Nick Kenyon throwing four innings of relief. He was followed to the mound by Billy Gorrell and Jamin Svendsen. The latter threw the last 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking three.

UCLA's (27-30, 10-12) Casey Janseen (6-6) picked up the win, throwing six innings of six hit, one run ball. He struck out four before Daniel Miltenberger took over in the seventh and Kyle Wilson finished up in the ninth.

The Bruins took advantage of shakey WSU defense and seven hits to score nine times in the opening inning and in the process they literally knocked Chamberlin out of the game. Warren Trott's sharp grounder back to the mound hit the Cougar starter in the right ankle and he had to leave the game trailing 7-0. Only four of the runs were earned.

WSU first dented the scoreboard in the second inning to offset a single tally by the Bruins in the top half of the inning. Three singles produced WSU's run, with Derek Bruce sprinting home on Justin Hart's grounder to short.

The Cougars scored a single tally in the seventh when Brandon Reddinger came home on a wild pitch. He opened the inning with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a single by Dustin Realini. In the ninth Reddinger belted his first home run of the season to center field, finishing the Cougar scoring.

UCLA added one run in the second, two runs in the third inning and then produced eight more in the fifth to go on top 20-1. Whisler, who had a two-run single in the first inning when 14 Bruins came to the plate, added a two-run double in the fifth, while Billy Susdorf belted his tenth home run of the year to score two more runs. Preston Griffin also drove home two runs in the inning with a single.

The Bruins' final run came on a Brandon Averill home run in the ninth, the only run off Svendsen. It was Averill's ninth long ball of the season.

The two teams continue the series Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. start. WSU's Aaron MacKenzie is expected to start for the Cougars.
