WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Washington State senior Collin Slaybaugh was named the Pac-12 Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Wednesday.

It is the fourth academic award the senior received from an outside entity in 2014. Earlier this year he was selected to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team for Division I after garnering a District 8 First Team accolade. The Pac-12 Conference also placed the Puyallup, Wash., native on its all-academic first team.

It is the fourth time in the seven-year history of the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete award program that the Cougars have had a student-athlete take home the honor in baseball, more than all other Pac-12 schools combined.

In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must be a senior (in athletics eligibility), on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in his/her sport, and have a minimum of one year in resident at the institution.

Slaybaugh owns a 4.00 GPA as a movement studies major. He also received a pair of Washington State University awards, the Senior Excellence in Academics Award and The Cougar Pride Trophy from Washington State. He batted .305 during his four-year career as a Cougar.

The Senior Excellence in Academics Award is given to seniors who have earned a minimum of 90 credits with at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA, been members of the WSU Athletics All-Academic Team each semester, enrolled at WSU for at least two years, and excelled in their degree program and sport program

The Cougar Pride Trophy is awarded to one male and one female senior who has maintained over a 3.00 cumulative GPA and has displayed exceptional academic, athletic and outstanding personal qualities.
