COUGS WRAP UP PAC-10 ACTION: The Washington State volleyball team faces Arizona State and Arizona in the final Pac-10 Conference matches of the 1998 season...currently, the Cougars are the filling in the Wildcats - Sun Devils cookie in Pac-10 standings...last weekend, Arizona needed five games to beat Arizona State in Tuscon...with four matches left in the season, WSU needs to be above .500 for an NCAA bid.

LAST WEEK: #16 UCLA defeated WSU 10-15, 15-4, 15-5, 15-10, Friday night in Pullman...UCLA freshman Kristee Porter led all players with 25 kills and seven blocks and fellow rookie Ashley Bowles added 21 kills and served six of the Bruins' 12 aces...Wendy Rouse had 13 kills and matched Cougar freshman Alicia Erickson with four blocks each...Sunday, the #11 USC Trojans defeated WSU 15-5, 15-10, 15-10...USC's Jasmina Marinkovic led all players with 19 kills, hitting .457...Rouse again led the Cougs with 12 kills...Samantha Spink had the match-high 16 digs.

ARIZONA STATE (10-13 overall, 7-9 Pac-10): The Sun Devils have lost three straight matches - in three at both UCLA and USC, and in five at Arizona...in Pullman, Sept. 20, WSU prevailed 3-16-2 sophomore OH Amanda Burbridge has a 4.68 kills per game average (4th in Pac-10) while freshman 6-0 OH Jami Coughlin contributes 3.14 kpg and leads the league with 3.62 digs per gameMB Shawna Vanley (6-0, senior) tallies 1.39 blocks per game (7th in Pac-10)ASU is coached by Patti Snyder-Park (158-127, ten years)Arizona State leads the series 14-12 but the Cougars have won the last seven contests

#19 ARIZONA (19-6 overall, 10-6 Pac-10): The Wildcats' win over state rival ASU was their sixth five-game match this season with five wins and an upset loss to Oregon...senior 6-0 MB Keisha Johnson Demps leads the Cats with 3.64 kills per game and 1.16 blocks per game averages...junior Raelene Elam (6-1, OH) contributes 3.39 kpg and is second in the league with 0.49 aces per game...sophomore Marisa DaLee (6-3, MB) bring 3.04 kills and 1.06 blocks per game with a .388 hitting percentage (2nd in Pac-10)Arizona is coached by Dave Rubio (120-75, seven years at UA; 240-140, 12 years career)Arizona leads the series 17-9 including a 3-0 win in Pullman Sept. 18...the Cougars last win in Tucson was in 1995.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Cindy Fredrick has a 195-124 record in her 10th season at WSU (.611)Fredrick's overall collegiate record in her 14th season is 281-184 (.604)...assisting Fredrick is her husband, Dr. Mashallah Farokhmanesh (tenth year), and Shannon Hoyt (first year).

ABOUT THE COUGARS:

Jennifer Stinson (6-1, senior, MB, Davenport, Wash.) dislocated her left ankle in practice 10/22 - had soft cast then and walking boot...served once in the USC game...leads WSU and is eighth in the Pac-10 with 4.15 kills per game...her 1.45 blocks per game is fifth in Pac-10has a .318 hitting percentage (seventh in Pac-10)...became the seventh Cougar in school history to nail 1000 kills in a career with 16 at UCLA - career total 1,006 kills...MVP of the Cougar Challenge Tournament.

Wendy Rouse (6-3, senior, LS, Reno, Nev.) fifth-year seniormoved into Stinson's MB spot since Washington match...scored career-high 25 kills (.429) at Oregon...season-best nine blocks at Oregon State...Rouse is second on team with 3.54 kills per game and third with 2.24 digs per gamealso recorded 21 kills in USC upset win...hit .480 vs. Long Beach State and .370 in five-game win at Cal...named to Cougar Challenge All-Tournament team.

Colleen Smith (6-6, sophomore, RS, Albuquerque, NM) currently coming off the bench to replace Lucie Vratnickova in the Cougar lineupslammed career-high 16 kills at Oregon, hitting .500...Smith averages 2.29 kills per game and 0.83 blocks per game...scooped up season-high 7 digs at Oregon.

Samantha Spink (5-9, senior, Setter, Coeur d'Alene, Id.) 2.84 digs per game leads team (8th in Pac-10)...also 0.79 blocks per game...tallies 12.23 assists per game (7th in Pac-10).her 22 digs against Gonzaga is a career-best...she had six blocks against Utah, Arizona State and #8 USC...very tough kid who plays through numerous injuries.

Kim Kleven (senior, DS, Spokane, Wash.) had a career-high 13 digs at Cal and 11 digs against #2 Long Beach State...became part of the Cougar starting six when Pac-10 competition started...drilled three services aces at Cal and next match versus Oregon.

Alicia Erickson (6-4, freshman, middle/outside hitter, Henderson, Nev.) averaging 1.22 blocks per game - tenth in Pac-10...had nine blocks at Idaho...tallied an impressive five blocks against #2 Long Beach State and stopped eight kills at the net against Arizona State...in five games at UW, had 6 kills in 11 attacks with no errors for .545 Hpct...also hit .500 at Cal...career-high 15 kills came against Cal where she hit .481...only plays front row as she subs in for DS starter, Kleven.

Joy Sperry (6-1, junior LS, Wallace, Id.) played match of her life at USC with 16 kills, 15 digs...also had 14 kills, .414 hpct, 13 digs and five blocks vs. Oregon...career-high 22 digs vs. Washington...hitting arm elbow taped for sensitive Ulnar nerve.

Lucie Vratnickova (6-1, senior, OH, Czech Republic) last ten matches started in front row in place of Colleen Smith...had career-highs of three service aces and 10 digs against Oregon...career-high seven kills at Stanford.

Missy Blackshire (5-10, freshman OH, Spokane, Wash.) plays left side for Joy Sperry...tallied career-high 20 kills at Oregon State...had 13 kills and hit .407 at Oregon...lethal jump serve, second-best on team behind Rouse.

Kristen Johnson (5-11, freshman, OH, Olympia, Wash.) subbed in at right side in Washington match when Rouse moved into Stinson's MB spot...tallied 17 kills and 11 digs against Washington...had three blocks vs. USC in Pullman.
