PULLMAN, Wash. -- Freshmen Kyra Holt and Emmy Allen combined for 31 kills but the Washington State volleyball team (16-12 overall record, 3-12 in Pac-12) fell short in a heartbreaking five-set match to UCLA (14-12, 5-11) Friday night before 688 fans at Bohler Gym. UCLA won with set scores of 20-25, 25-12, 25-15, 21-25, 15-13.

Holt had 18 kills, nine digs and four blocks while Allen tallied 13 kills, hit. 357 and had one block. Ver’Leea Hardaway contributed 11 kills and hit .692 for the match. Marcelina Glab had eight kills and led the match with six blocks. Camryn Irwin set up 35 assists and kate Sommer led the match with 17 digs while Tani Stephens contributed 12 digs and two aces.

UCLA was led by Karsta Lowe’s 22 kills with Kelly Reeves tallying 10 kills (.409) and 12 digs. Mariana Aquino added 17 kills hitting .682. Megan Moenoa had 52 assists, Zoe Nighingale had five blocks and Karly Drolson had three aces.

UCLA hit .370 for the match and WSU hit .290 while both teams had eight blocks.

“I liked the way that we made some adjustments tonight,” Cougars Head Coach Jen Greeny said when asked to find a highlight for the WSU team. “We talked about getting our block going and cleaning up our passing after sets two and three were pretty rough. The team really did that and responded well and fought til the end. We’ve had a lot of five-setters this season. It is a good thing although it’s tough to see right now that in the future it will help us along. Making those adjustments tonight will help us going forward.”

WSU hosts No. 4 USC (22-4 overall, 12-3 Pac-12) Sunday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. in Bohler Gym with the match broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks. USC lost at No. 3 Washington Friday night 3-1.
