Volleyball Begins Practice for 2013 Season

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The 15 players on the Washington State volleyball team enthusiastically participated in the first official practice for the 2013 season Thursday morning in Bohler Gym.

Third-year Head Coach Jen Greeny and her staff of assistant coaches, Burdette Greeny and Shannon Hunt along with volunteer coach Kali Gesser, welcomed the Cougars to the court for the first of 10 days of two-a-day practices.

Eight returning letterwinners, including six starters from the 2012 squad, have been joined a junior college transfer and the six freshmen who have been tabbed the 14th-best recruiting class in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. The Cougars will practice in the mornings and afternoons until Washington State University fall classes begin Aug. 19 when the volleyball practices will be held from 2-5 p.m.

WSU volleyball opens the 2013 season at the Army Black Knights Invitational, Aug. 3 and Sept. 1, in West Point, NY, taking on Alabama, Seton Hall and host Army. The following weekend WSU hosts the Cougar Challenge Tournament with Eastern Washington, Montana, Texas Tech and South Dakota playing in Bohler Gym Sept. 6 and 7.

All road matches will be broadcast live in the Pullman area on KQQQ-AM radio (1150) and on the wsucougars.com website. Veteran broadcaster Steve Grubbs will be announcing his eighth season of Cougar volleyball.

The Pac-12 TV Networks will broadcast 14 WSU matches in 2013. WSU’s opening Pac-12 match will be at home against cross-state rival Washington Wed., Sept. 25, in a 7:30 p.m. contest to be televised live regionally on the Pac-12 Networks. Other TV contests for the Cougars include Arizona, Arizona State, California, Colorado, Oregon State, Stanford and USC. The Nov. 6 match at Arizona State will be a Pac-12 Networks national telecast.

A “Meet and Greet” dessert with the Cougar volleyball team and all WSU volleyball season ticket holders is set for Wed., Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. in Bohler Gym. Defending Pac-12 Champion Stanford received 120 points and 10 first-place votes in the 2013 Preseason Pac-12 Coaches Poll voted on by the league coaches. USC was selected second with 111 points and received two votes for first place. The rest of the poll with points received is: 3. Washington 99, 4. Oregon 91, 5. UCLA 76, 6. Arizona State 65, 7. California 59, 8. Arizona 52, 9. Utah 49, 10. Colorado 30, 11. Washington State 21, and 12. Oregon State 19.

For the first time the Pac-12 has selected a preseason all-conference volleyball team. The 2013 Preseason All-Pac-12 Volleyball Team is: Inky Ajanaku, Stanford; Liz Brenner, Oregon; Samantha Bricio, USC; Jordan Burgess, Stanford; Macey Gardner, Arizona State; Adrienne Gehan, California; Natalie Hagglund, USC; Brittany Howard, Stanford; Madi Kingdon, Arizona; Kylin Munoz, Washington; Lauren Plum, Oregon; Kelly Reeves, UCLA; Krista Vansant, Washington; and Carly Wopat, Stanford.
