PULLMAN, Wash. – Charlotte Koning converted on her fifth match point of the afternoon to post the clinching victory as Washington State defeated Colorado 4-2 in the Pac-12 Conference tennis opener for both teams Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. With the win the Cougars improve to 13-2 on the season while Colorado falls to 7-5.

After winning the first set 6-3, Koning had match points serving at 5-4 and 6-5 but could not convert. Not until the fifth match point, leading 6-4 in the tiebreaker, did she prevail, defeating Ashley Tiefel at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), securing the team victory. With the team victory secure, the final match on court, WSU’s Dajana Ognjenovic against Carla Manzi Tenorio at No. 5 singles, was halted with Manzi Tenorio leading 6-4, 3-6, 1-0.

After taking the opening doubles point, the Cougars extended their lead to 3-0 as Maria Biryukova and Lize Leenknecht posted straight-set victories. Biryukova capitalized on a break of serve in the first and rallied from 2-4 down in the second to post a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win over Alexandra Aiello at No. 2 singles. Leenknecht followed right behind as she defeated Winde Janssens 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3, putting the Cougars one victory away from the team win.

Colorado got on the board when Julyette Steur rallied from a set down to defeat Elizaveta Luzina 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. The Buffaloes cut the deficit in half thanks to another three-set win as Nuria Ormeno Ruiz rallied for a 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win over Olga Musilovich at No. 4.

In doubles action, WSU swept the first two matches to secure the point. Biryukova and Musilovich were first off after an 8-1 win over Aiello and Manzi Tenorio at No. 2. Leenknecht and Luzina then clinched the point as they defeated Janssens and Ormeno Ruiz 8-6 at No. 1. With the doubles point already earned, the No. 3 match was halted with the Cougars’ Koning and Ognjenovic leading Steur and Tiefel 7-3.

The Cougars return to the court Saturday when they host No. 44 Utah at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
