WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State junior Elizaveta Luzina has been named the Pac-12 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 11-17, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Luzina won both of her singles matches to help the Cougars post back-to-back wins over nationally-ranked Fresno State (No. 66) and San Diego (65). In Friday’s victory, Luzina won two hard-fought sets as she defeated the nation’s 41st-ranked player, Sophie Watts, 7-5, 7-5. It marked the highest-ranked opponent Luzina has defeated while at Washington State. The following afternoon she needed a first-set tiebreaker before completing the 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over San Diego’s Shani Blecher.
In doubles action Luzina teamed with Lize Leenknecht for a pair of victories, defeating Fresno State’s Aishwarya Agrawal and Rana Sherif Ahmed 8-4 followed by an 8-6 win over San Diego’s Marta Stojanovic and Mikayla Morkel-Brink.
The weekend continued a great start for Luzina, who saw her singles record improve to 21-3 overall and 10-1 in dual match play, all at the No. 1 position. She and Leenknecht are 19-2 overall and 9-1 in duals, all at the top position.
Luzina is the first Cougar to receive Player of the Week honors since Liz Fournier did so March 19, 2012.
