Cougars Return to Hollingbery for Three Matches

THIS WEEK: The Cougars return to Hollingbery Fieldhouse for three matches this weekend, beginning Friday against BYU and followed with a pair of Saturday matches against UC Santa Barbara and Seattle. The BYU Cougars enter the match with have an 0-2 record, having dropped a pair of matches last weekend against No. 28 Tulsa and No. 41 Washington. The all-time series between WSU and BYU stands at 7-7, with BYU capturing a 4-3 decision in Provo last season. UCSB enters Saturday’s match with a 1-3 record, having defeated Loyola Marymount 4-3 last weekend. Washington State holds a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series, though the Gauchos won the last meeting, a 5-2 decision in 2009. Seattle has dropped its first five matches of the 2014 season and trail the all-time series 7-1.

LAST WEEK: The Cougars came away with a two-match sweep last weekend in Missoula. WSU opened the week with a 6-1 victory over Montana, taking the doubles point and then five singles matches en route to the victory. Against Minnesota, the first meeting between the two schools, the Cougars dropped the doubles point then came back to take four singles matches for the win. No. 1 Elizaveta Luzina posted a straight-set win over Tereza Brichacova, ranked No. 65 in the nation, while Lize Leenknecht rallied from a set down to clinch the win with a three-set victory at No. 2.

LUZINA OFF TO FAST START: Junior Elizaveta Luzina is off to a fast start this season, posting a 16-3 record, including a 5-1 mark in dual matches. Luzina has played all six dual matches at the No. 1 spot and last weekend defeated No. 65 Tereza Brichacova, the highest-ranked opponent she has defeated during her Cougar career. Luzina enters the weekend with 66 career victories and needs 10 more to break into WSU’s career top 10 list.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2014 season the Cougars will have five new faces to go with five returners. The returning roster includes senior Olga Musilovich, juniors Elizaveta Luzina and Charlotte Koning and sophomores Lize Leenknecht (captain) and Dajana Ognjenovic. New to the squad this season are sophomore Maria Biryukova, who arrived in Pullman last fall after transferring from Baylor, senior Emily Funabiki, a Pullman native who arrived at WSU in January after graduating from Willamette, and freshmen Victoria Matejevic, Evie Li and Yumi Li.

LAST SEASON IN REVIEW: Washington State finished off dual match play with a 14-12 overall record and 2-8 in conference play in 2013. The Cougars finished eighth in a very competitive Pac-12 conference that had the top seven teams finishing with national rankings. Departed from that team were three seniors who finished their Cougar careers ranked among the all-time wins leaders in school history. Liudmila Vasilieva ended her career with 107 wins, one shy of Elizabeth Fournier’s leading mark of 108. Ksenia Googe left Pullman with 92 career wins, good for third all-time, while Andjela Kankaras ended her career with 87 victories, tied for fifth all-time.

COACH HART: Lisa Hart is in her 11th season as the head coach of Washington State. Hart has accumulated 125 wins over her tenure, registering a 14-12 record last season. In 2012 the Cougars went 19-7 as Hart was awarded the Pac-12 Conference Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year award for the 2011-12 season.

PARKING AT HOLLINGBERY FIELDHOUSE: Fans coming to Cougar Tennis matches this season can park in the Yellow 1 parking lot located directly south of Beasley Coliseum. There will not be any charge for parking on weekends, and daily passes can be purchased for weekday contests. Another option for tennis fans to park would be the Library Garage. The garage costs $3 for the entire day to park on either a Saturday or Sunday.
