PULLMAN, Wash. – In the second day of the 2013 Cougar Classic, Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht each won both of their singles matches and advanced to the championship of their respective singles flights.
In the Flight 1 singles bracket, Luzina edged Gonzaga’s Kylie Peek in the quarterfinals with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. In the semifinals, Luzina defeated Sandy Vo of Boise State, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. She will face Boise State’s Teal Vosburgh in the Flight 1 singles championship Sunday. Vosburgh beat Cougar sophomore Maria Biryukova in the semifinals, 6-5, 6-2.
In the quarterfinals of the Flight 2 singles bracket, Leenknecht defeated Molly Crum of Montana State in dominant fasion, with a final match score of 6-1, 6-0. In the semifinals, Leenknecht fell behind early by dropping the first set (5-6) to Boise State’s Anissa Bryant. The Cougar sophomore rallied from her one-set deficit and beat Bryant 5-6, 6-0, 6-1 to earn her spot in the Flight 2 singles championship.
Washington State sophomore Dajana Ognjenovic was defeated by Belen Barcenilla (Idaho) 4-6, 2-6 in the quarterfinals of the Flight 2 singles bracket.
Leenknecht and Luzina also advanced as a doubles team to the semifinals in the Flight 1 doubles bracket. They defeated Cassidy Branstine and Lexi Turley of Utah State, 6-2.
In the Flight 2 doubles bracket, the doubles team of Hanley Caras (Gonzaga) and Kaitlyn Brown (Boise State) withdrew, advancing Washington State’s Biryukova and Ognjenovic to the semifinals.
All matches were played at the Washington State indoor courts Saturday due to rain.
The final day of the 2013 Cougar Classic will begin Sunday at 9 a.m.
