WSU Tennis Dominates Opening Day of Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women’s tennis team won nine of its 10 singles matches and both of its doubles matches in the opening day of the 2013 Cougar Classic. The Cougars had four players advance to the quarterfinals of their respective singles flights.

Junior Elizaveta Luzina led the way with the number one seed in the Flight 1 singles bracket. Luzina defeated Cassidy Branstine of Utah State, 6-4, 6-1 to begin the day. She finished her day in singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Montana State’s Iva Parapunova.

Washington State sophomore Maria Biryukova accompanied Luzina with two wins in the Flight 1 singles bracket in Friday’s opening round. Biryukova advanced to the second round by a withdrawal from Marina Todd of Portland State, and then edged Utah State’s Lexi Turley 7-5, 7-5 to continue to the tournament quarterfinals.

In Flight 2 singles, sophomore Lize Leenknecht advanced through the first two rounds in dominant fashion. In the first round, Leenknecht blanked Seattle’s Samantha Garrard 6-0, 6-0. She then notched a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hanley Caras of Gonzaga in the second round. Fellow Cougar sophomore Dajana Ognjenovic had a similarly dominant performance. Ognjenovic beat Gabi Villegas (Montana State) 6-1, 6-0, and Kailyn Skjonsby (Seattle) 6-0, 6-1 in the first and second rounds, respectively.

Cougar freshman Cathrine Arnholdt Pedersen swept Netti Dayhuff of Lewis-Clark State 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the Flight 2 singles bracket. She was then defeated by Sammie Watson of Boise State in the (2-6, 0-6).

The Cougars advanced both doubles teams to the second round, with one team competing in each doubles flight. Leenknecht and Luzina notched a 6-4 victory over Laura Middel and Wena Tsan of Montana State in the Flight 1 doubles bracket. In the Flight 2 doubles bracket, Biryukova and Ognjenovic defeated Seattle’s Kailyn Skjonsby and Jacqueline Jacques to advance to the second round.

Tournament play was moved indoors Friday afternoon due to inclement weather. Weather permitting, play will resume Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
