BOISE, Idaho – Sophomore Maria Biryukova advanced to the Orange Flight final while Elizaveta Luzina and Dajana Ognjenovic each won two matches to highlight Saturday’s play at the Boise State Jack Taylor Classic.
Biryukova, the top seed in the Orange Flight, posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Anissa Bryant-Swift of Boise State in the quarterfinals followed by a 6-3, 6-2 win over Abilene Christian’s Kaysie Hermsdorf in one semifinal. Also in the Orange Flight, Ognjenovic posted two back-draw victories, defeating Eastern Washington’s Alexis Filliol, 6-2, 7-5, and a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 win over Utah State’s Cassidy Branstine.
In the Blue Flight back draw, Luzina posted straight-set wins over Montana State’s Pauline Lopez, 6-0, 6-1, and Boise State’s Sammie Watson, 6-0, 6-2. Lize Leenknecht dropped her back-draw match against Montana’s Laurence Pelchat, 2-6, 7-6, 10-4.
In doubles action, Leenknecht and Luzina captured their quarterfinal match with an 8-5 win over Idaho’s Vicky Lozano and Bety Flores. In their semifinal, they dropped a close, 8-6, contest to Boise State’s Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil. The Cougar duo of Biryukova and Ognjenovic fell to Hermsdorf and Erin Walker of Abilene Christian, 8-3, then rebounded in the back draw for an 8-5 win over Michelle Warwick and Nittaya Phonharath of Weber State, 8-5.
