LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Washington State University men's golf team is in a battle for the lead after two rounds at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. The Cougars will head into the final round Tuesday one stroke behind tournament leader No. 17 UNLV at the par-72, 7,074-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course.

"We played great again today in a good field and put ourselves in a great position," said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. "Now we need to take that next step and play a good final round tomorrow."

Trent Sanders led the way for the Cougars, finishing one stroke behind the individual leader. The sophomore posted a 68 (-3) in the opening round followed by a season-best 67 (-4) to finish the day in a three-way tie for second place. A win tomorrow would mark the second for Sanders this season, making him the only person in Cougar history to win two tournaments in one season.

Nick Ellis finished the day with nine birdies, fifth-most in the 193-person field. He carded 138 (-4) on the day and will tee off tomorrow in a tie for 12th. A top-25 finish tomorrow would give the junior sole possession of seventh place on the career top 25 list (17).

Kevin Tucker and Hank Frame tallied a two-round total of 140 (-2) to finish in a tie for 20th. A top-25 finish for Tucker would mark the 21st of his career, moving him to fourth on the WSU all-time list.

John Moon finished out the WSU lineup with a first-day total of 151.

The team will pair up with UNLV and Kansas State during its final round of the fall season, beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. MT.

"We have the opportunity to play with two teams ranked well ahead of us tomorrow and we look forward to seeing how we stack up," said Williams.
