CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington State men's golf team holds the lead after two rounds at the Giustina Memorial Classic, held at the par-72, 7,030-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club, with sophomore Trent Sanders representing the Cougars at the top of the individual leaderboard.
The WSU men opened the day with a first-round score of 277 (-11), which served as the lowest team score of the tournament, and the Cougars' lowest round of the season. A second round score of 284 put the WSU team at 561(-15) for the tournament, and will head into the final round four strokes ahead of host school Oregon State.
"We played great today," said head coach Walt Williams. "Rain and wind made it tough in the afternoon round but the guys really hung in there and posted a good team score."
Sanders posted two rounds of 68 (-4). The two-round total of 136 is the lowest 36-hole total the sophomore's career, beating his previous best by three strokes. Sanders earned his first collegiate top-10 finish at this event last year, and will look to earn his first win as Cougar tomorrow.
Austin Hurt finished in a tie for third after Monday's rounds. The senior began the tournament by carding a season-low 68 in the first round, leading him to first-day total of 138 (-6). Hurt will try to put together back-to-back top-10 finishes after placing second at the Falcon Invitational last week.
Fellow senior Kevin Tucker posted a 67 (-5) in the morning round, the second lowest score of the tournament. The Kennewick, Wash., native finished the day in a tie for 10th with a total of 143.
Junior Nick Ellis and Freshman Hank Frame concluded the Cougar lineup. Ellis tallied a two-round score of 147 (+3), and is in 24th entering tomorrow's round. Frame finished a stroke behind at 148, and sits just outside the top 25, in a tie for 27th place.
Play will resume tomorrow with tee times beginning at 7:45 a.m. Check www.wsucougars.com for final results.
