Rancho Murieta, Calif. --- Top-five performances by Isaac Woods and Jon Reehoorn helped Washington State stay within two strokes of the lead on the first day of action at the Sacramento State State Invitational.
The Cougars carded rounds of 300 and 298, and trail only Idaho in the team standings. Washington State edged out the Vandals for the team medal last Monday at the Inland Collegiate Challenge.
Woods, a freshman from Enumclaw, Wash., is in third place after shooting a 75-72--147 over the first two rounds. Reehoorn is just one stroke back in a tie for fourth place.
Sophomore Dustin White is also in contention for a top 10 finish after carding rounds of 75 and 76, and finishing the day tied for 14th. Freshman Ryan Camp shot a pair of 77s and is knotted with three other players at 20th.
Mark Lawless of Cal State-Stanislaus is the individual leader. His 69 in the second round was tied for the best of the day with Idaho's Doug McClure. Santa Clara's Drew Corwin is three strokes down in second place.
Play begins tomorrow at 9 a.m.
