STANFORD, Calif. – On a sunny day in Stanford, Calif., senior Blake Snyder led the Washington State University men’s golf team in the opening round of play at The Goodwin at the Stanford Golf Course. Snyder shot 2-under par (68) on the par-70 course to finish tied for 11th place. Snyder’s finish was highlighted by an eagle on the 13th hole.

The Cougars currently sit in 14th place, carding a 288 (+8) in the opening 18 holes. WSU sits just two strokes back from a four-way tie for ninth place, among the likes of No. 19 Washington and No. 46 Northwestern. Host school Stanford (-12, 268) currently leads the tournament. The Cardinal’s Patrick Rodgers shot 7-under (63) on the day to lead individual competition.

WSU redshirt junior Sang Lee finished the day 1-over par (71), with three birdies on his scorecard. Lee is currently tied for 38th. Senior Jarrett Foote shot 4-over par on the front nine, but recovered by shooting even with par on the back nine to finish tied for 66th (+4, 74). Juniors Michael Anderson and Charlie Mroz carded 75 (+5) and 77 (+7), respectively. Anderson is tied for 76th, with Mroz tied for 86th.

“Blake and Sang played really well today,” Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “Jarrett did a good job to hang on in last nine. We just need to not make double bogeys. It’s not too difficult of a course, but you can put yourself in tough spots. We need to put ourselves in good spots. We’ve got 36 holes to play and we aren’t many strokes back from the middle of the field. A good round tomorrow can go a long ways.”

The Goodwin, formerly known as the United States Intercollegiate, was renamed prior to the 2014 edition in honor of former Stanford men’s golf coach, Wally Goodwin.

The tournament continues tomorrow with the second round of play off holes 1 and 10. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. The final round will be played Sunday. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com for the tournament's duration. Tournament results and recap will be available at the conclusion of each day of competition at wsucougars.com.
