PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University men's golf team opened its 2013-14 season at home, sitting atop the leaderboard through 36 holes in the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at Washington State University’s Palouse Ridge Golf Course.

The Cougars lead the tournament at 8-under (552), seven shots better than Cal State Fullerton’s 1-under (559). Sacramento State, which led after the first round, is third at 5-over (565).

The Cougar team carded a combined 270 (10-under) in the second round of the day to set a tournament record for any round by a team.

The Cougars controlled two of the top three spots at the conclusion of the tournament’s first day. Washington State senior Blake Snyder led the way, finishing tied for the tournament lead at 135 (-5) with San Jose State’s Cody Blick. WSU junior Michael Anderson is tied for third place, carding a 136 (-4) through 36 holes.

“We were really flat on the front nine in the first round,” Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “Our guys played awesome over the last-27 holes. Blake Snyder played great. Ryan Books was 4-under on the back nine in the second round. We counted four scores in the 60s in the afternoon. Nick Mandell struggled during his first-collegiate tournament, but bounced back nicely in the second round.”

The Cougars finished the first round two strokes over par at 282 and two strokes behind then-first place Sacramento State.

Tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday for the final round of the tournament. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com for the tournament's duration. Full tournament results and recap will be available at the conclusion of the tournament at wsucougars.com.
