PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State freshman Alissa Brooks-Johnson won the women’s pentathlon and Austin Sodorff won the men’s pole vault at Friday’s Cougar Indoor/Multis competition at the WSU Indoor Facility on the Pullman campus.
Brooks-Johnson, from Doty, Wash., scored 3,521 points, the sixth-best mark in WSU records, with five lifetime best marks in her collegiate pentathlon debut. Brooks-Johnson ran the 60m hurdles in a time of 9.18 seconds, high jumped 5-feet 3 3/4 inches (1.62m), threw the shot put 33-6 1/2 (10.22m), long jumped 16-7 1/4 (5.06m) and ran the 800m in a time of 2 minutes 24.09 seconds. Tayler Fettig from Central Washington finished second with 3,384 points, Christina Dobbins from Whitworth was third with 3,258 points and Taylor Sheppard was fourth with 2,809 points.
Sodorff, a sophomore from Woodinville, Wash., and John Brenteson, a senior from Vancouver, Wash., finished one-two in the men’s pole vault. Sodorff equaled his indoor PR height of 16-4 3/4 (5.05m) in the win while Brenteson cleared the bar at 15-5 (4.70m).
WSU’s Travis Pickett (sophomore, Snohomish, Wash.) threw the men’s 35-pound a PR distance of 56-4 3/4 (17.19m) for third place while Sam Wardell finished seventh with a throw of 47-4 1/2 (14.44m). Idaho’s Kyle Rothwell won the event with a toss of 58-2 1/2 (17.74m).
Two other field event finals held Friday night including the women’s weight throw won by Kaytlyn Coleman (Lewis-Clark State) with a meet record throw of 59-11 3/4 (18.28m), breaking WSU’s Marie Muai’s 2004 record of 59-0 (18.00m). The men’s long jump, won by Arphaxad Carroll (Idaho) with a leap of 23-9 1/2 (7.25m). WSU’s PJ Benedictus was the long jump runner-up with an indoor PR distance of 23-0 (7.01m).
WSU freshman Dino Dodig (Novi Sad, Serbia) is the leader in the men’s heptathlon after the first day’s four events with 2,984 points. Colin Briggs from Idaho is in second place with 2,876 points and WSU’s Spencer Wordell is third with 2,787 points.
Dodig ran the 60m dash equaling his season-best time of 7.33, long jumped a PR distance of 23-0 1/2 (7.02m), threw the shot put a PR distance of 40-7 3/4 (12.39m) and high jumped a season-best 6-5 (1.96m). Wordell ran the 60m dash in a season-best time of 7.17, long jumped a PR distance of 21-7 1/2 (6.59m), threw the shot put 38-2 1/4 (11.64m), and high jumped 6-0 1/2 (1.84m).
The Cougar Indoor/Multis Meet continues Saturday at 10 a.m. Saturday with the men’s heptathlon 60m hurdles. There is no charge for spectators to watch the meet.
