UC Irvine Invitational
THIS WEEK: The Washington State University women's swim team opens the 2005 portion of their schedule with a trip to the UC Irvine Invitational...the invitational consists of three individual swim meets and a diving invitational...meet begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with the sprint meet...distance meet begins 30 minutes after spring meet concludes...relay meet will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday...Cougars will not take place in the diving invitational.
LARGE FIELD AT UC IRVINE INVITATIONAL: Washington State is one of 18 schools competing in the two-day meet on the women's side...other participants include host UC Irvine, Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Idaho, Illinois, Illinois State, Nevada, New Mexico State, Pepperdine, Rice, San Diego State and San Jose State...non-division I schools competing include Cal Baptist, Cal State Hayward, Chapman, Gordon College and Soka.
COACH QUAM: Erica Quam is in her third season as the WSU head women's swimming coach.
LAST SEASON: Five swimmers placed on the Cougar all-time top 10 list at the Pacific-10 Championships...top finishers included Lindsay Backhouse in the 100 and 200 backstroke, Jane Copland and Monika Povilonyte in the breaststroke events...Erin McCleave recorded a school record in the 200 freestyle.
ACADEMICS: WSU finished first in the nation academically spring semester 2004 with a 3.66 grade point average...Cougars finished fourth in the fall of 2003 with a GPA of 3.489.
UP NEXT: The Cougars will travel to Reno, Nev., for a dual meet with Nevada, Saturday, Jan. 22.
