Cougars Finish Second at Speedo Cup Invitational

Long Beach, Calif. - The Washington State University women's swim team finished second in the Speedo Cup Invitational Saturday. In the third and final day of competition, WSU added 198 points to their 473 points from the first two days of competition giving them a total of 671. The Tigers of Pacific finished first with 1383 points, while the host, the UC-Irvine Anteaters, grabbed third (558) and the Toreros of San Diego finished in fourth (478.5).

The Cougars picked up their fifth top three relay finish, with a second place finish in the 400 free relay (3:31.09).

Senior Lindsay Henahan led WSU through the invitational by capturing three individual second place finishes. Her last of the three came in the final day of competition in the 100 freestyle (51.68). Henahan's previous second place finishes came in the 50 free (Thursday) and the 100 butterfly (Friday).

The Cougars had 10 other swimmers make the finals in their respective events, Saturday. Freshman Jane Copland led the team with the only WSU individual first place finish of the invitational. Copland swam a career best time of 2:16.29 in her victory in the 200 breaststroke. Copland finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke (Friday) and eighth in the 200 individual medley (Thursday).

Sara Schmied (24) also placed in the finals in the 100 freestyle, while Lesley Ouellette (12) grabbed a top 15 finish in the 200 breaststroke. Becca Cohen swam her way into the top ten for the third time in the invitational with a seventh place finish in the 1650 free Saturday. Jill Olson (9) also landed in the top ten in that event.

Other top finishers for WSU were Sasha Taylor (12), Nicole Chinn (20) and Theresa Dunn (22) in the 200 backstroke. Rounding out the top finishers for the Cougars were Lisa Irwin (23) and Natascha Renfro (24) in the 200 butterfly.

The Cougars are off until Saturday, January 4, 2003, when they head to Manoa, Hawaii to compete in the Aileen Soule Classic Meet.
