PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University freshman Melissa Hubley started off her collegiate career setting a new Gibb Pool record with a time of 2 minutes, 5.55 seconds in the 200-yard butterfly during a double dual meet versus No. 16 Minnesota and Florida State Saturday.

The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native, won the event by 2.2 seconds over her nearest opponent, Jenny Hennen of Minnesota. Hubley erased a 6-year-old pool record and swam the second best time in the 200 butterfly for any Cougar.

"I didn't expect it at all," said Hubley on winning the race. "I swam as fast as I could and I am really happy with the results. It's intimidating swimming against big name schools, but I swam my own race."

Senior All-American Erin Eldridge (Kirkland, Wash.) captured the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:18.47. The time places her in the college women's top 25 in the event and came close to the NCAA consideration time cut of 2:17.75.

In final team scoring, No. 16 Minnesota held precedence over Florida State (54-41) and WSU (56-36). The Cougars lost by two points to the Lady Seminoles 48-46. Minnesota goes to 2-0, FSU 3-2 and WSU 0-4.

"There was a lot of great swimming today and a lot of good times," WSU coach Rocco Aceto said. "Although we are overshadowed by top teams, we have to get schools in such as Minnesota and Florida State to be competitive.

"There is more tradition now, then when we first started," he said. "If these kids can be competitive with FSU and Minnesota, they better be ultra-competitive against Washington."

The Cougars will next host Central Washington Saturday, November 6 at 11 a.m.
