PULLMAN, Wash. -- Freshman Lindsay Henahan broke a school and pool record in the 100-yard butterfly despite the Washington State women's swimming team's 140-121 loss to Oregon State Friday night at Gibb Pool.

The Rochester, N.Y. native, clocked in a time of 56.45 seconds to erase one of the oldest school records to-date. Former Cougar Erica Dunn held the record since 1993 with a 56.58.

"I haven't swam that fast this year," Henahan said. "One of my goals entering the season was to break a school record before Pac-10s. I'm really pleased that I could do it tonight."

For the Beavers, the victory snapped the Cougars' longest winning streak against an opponent. OSU last defeated WSU during the 1987-88 season down in Corvallis, Ore. with a 118-114 final tally. WSU beat OSU 18 consecutive times since then.

The nightcap featured another fab freshman performance. Melissa Hubley (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) rewrote her own school record in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.33. Both Hubley's and Henahan's times are just mere seconds off the NCAA consideration time cuts for each event (56.11 - 100 butterfly) and (2:02.93 - 200 butterfly).

It was also Senior Night for five veterans of the Cougar Swimming program. Gretchen Chambers (Adelaide, Australia), Erin Eldridge (Kirkland), Kelley Miedema (Cape Town, South Africa), Suzie Muirhead (Mukilteo) and Eli Schmied (Woodinville) were honored on deck. All have been with the program since 1996.

Eldridge showed All-American form finishing the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:03.01 and the 200 breaststroke with a 2:16.69 to recapture the Gibb Pool record in the event. Miedema placed first in the 100 (58.05) and 200 (2:05.68) backstrokes.

"This was the best meet we have had in regards to team spirit and willingness to win," Co-Captain Chambers said. "There was a lot of emotion and a realization that this was one of our last meets ever. It is amazing to remember where we once were and see how far we have come."

The Cougars and Beavers prepare for one more meet set for 11 a.m. at Gibb Pool Saturday morning.
