FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - WSU swimmers Kayli Changstrom, Erin McCleave, Monika Povilonyte and Kenzie Reiter are set to compete at the 2006 U.S. National Spring Championships held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center March 28 - April 1.
"This week provides our swimmers with an opportunity to race in a 50m, long-course format to round out our season," said WSU Head Swimming Coach Erica Quam. "The U.S. Nationals provide a strong field of competitors and our goal is to be aggressive in the preliminary morning sessions and earn those second swims at evening finals sessions. Only 16 competitors make it into the finals so you have to be ready to go in the morning."
Changstrom is scheduled to compete in the 200 butterfly, 400 individual medley and 200 individual medley time trial. Reiter will also race the 400 individual medley and 200 individual medley time trial as well as the 200 breaststroke.
Povilonyte will swim the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with McCleave competing in the 200, 400 and 1500 freestyle races. Changstrom, McCleave, Povilonyte and Reiter will also combine in the 400 medley relay.
"Kayli and Kenzie have trained hard together since the Pac-10 Championships and have set themselves up well for their events." Quam continued. "Monika had some solid long-course swims earlier this year at the U.S. Open in Auburn. She is seated well and can hopefully improve on those performances. Erin has never had the opportunity to swim a long-course mile so this will be a great opportunity to race one and give her something to improve on for the upcoming summer season."
Competition at the 2006 Spring Nationals begins today with the women's 800 freestyle and the men's 1500 freestyle preliminaries. Racing continues Wednesday, March 29, with the women's 800 and the men's 1500 freestyle finals along with both the men's and women's 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly events.
