This Week: WSU heads to the UC Irvine Invite after a month off...the Cougars are wrapping up winter training in San Diego, Calif., and will be competing Jan. 5 in Irvine, Calif.
Cougar Catch-up: The Cougars last competed at the Princeton Invitational at the beginning of December...WSU placed third behind No. 11 Penn State and Princeton...sophomore Michaela Ahlin earned three NCAA B Standards in the 200 butterfly (2:00.32), 400 IM (4:23.15) and the 500 freestyle (4:53.95)...junior Elyse Peterson swam a NCAA B Standard time in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.55)...also earning a NCAA B Standard at the three-day meet was Lina Daugvilaite in the 1650 freestyle (16:52.26)...as a team, the Cougars posted 75 season bests at the meet, 36 lifetime bests and 18 entries on the Cougars' all-time top 10 list.
UC Irvine Invite: The UC Irvine Invite is a one-day meet...the sprint distances in the backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle will be raced in the morning and the 1000 freestyle, 400 IM and 1650 freestyle will be raced in the afternoon...the field includes Pepperdine, Chapman, CMS, San Jose State, Boise State, Soka and UC Irvine...the Cougars competed against San Jose State two months ago and won the dual 170.5-81.5.
In the Spotlight: The last time sophomore Michaela Ahlin was in the pool to race, she posted three NCAA B Standard times.
Head Coach Erica Quam Says: (On winter training): "After Princeton, the team focused on academics and wrapping up the semester. We've turned up the intensity and have continued to add to our aerobic foundation with challenging training and limited distractions."
(On the UC Irvine Invite): "This meet is important for us to get off blocks and back into racing. The team will be swimming some events they don't swim normally during the season; it will be a good meet to get back into competing."
Next Up for the Cougars: WSU will compete in the Long Beach Grand Prix meet in Long Beach, Calif., Jan. 19-21...the Cougars return home for their final home competition Feb. 1, hosting Oregon State.
