CORVALLIS, Ore. - Washington State (4-2-0) recorded its fourth win of the season Friday as the Cougars defeated Virginia Commonwealth (1-2-3) 1-0 in the first game of the OSU Nike Invitational Tournament at Paul Lorenz Field.
Freshman Megan Hyte scored the game winner after 46 minutes of scoreless play finding the back of the net with a hard shot from the right side of the box. Shaye Harrel provided the assist on the play.
Hyte leads the team with four goals in 2005 with Friday's tally marking her fourth game winner of the season. The four game winners tie Hyte at fourth on WSU's game winning goals in a season list and sixth on the career list.
Washington State out shot VCU 11-to-8 in the contest with Alix Rustrum leading the Cougar offense with three. Harrel, Hyte and Jennie Kunc each added two. Keeper Katie Hultin made four saves preserving her second solo shutout of the season.
The Cougars continue OSU Nike Invitational tournament play taking on Long Island Sunday, Sept. 18 at Noon.
