WSU Soccer Travels To Bay Area For Pac-10 Action This Weekend

Washington State (5-9-1, 1-3-1 Pac10) will play California (7-6-3, 2-4-0) Friday, Oct. 31 and Stanford (8-7-2, 3-2-1) Sunday, Nov. 2...the Cougars take on the Golden Bears at 3 p.m. at Berkeley...Sunday's match will be at noon at Stanford...these are must win matches if the Cougars hope to qualify for the NCAA College Cup.

Head coach Matt Potter had this to say about the upcoming weekend, "We go to the Bay Area knowing it's a tough place to get results, but we know what's needed.

"The weekend's results in the Pac-10 proved once again what a competitive conference we are in. But on any given day anything is possible, so we will prepare, and look to perform to our capabilities to get positive results at Cal and Stanford."

Scouting the Golden Bears: California is 2-4-0 in Pac-10 play having come off a split with Oregon State and Oregon last weekend...the Golden Bears beat OSU 3-2 Oct. 24... Amy Wilison was credited with assists on both goals...she has four assists and one goal this season...both Alivia Mazura and Dania Cabello scored their second goals of the season for the Golden Bears against Oregon State...California nudged out OSU in shots 14-13...the Golden Bears had five corner kick opportunities and did not allow the Beavers any corner kicks...California goalkeeper Anna Key had four saves, all in the first half ...Oregonhanded California 2-0 loss...California recorded 14 shots to Oregon's 16...the Golden Bear's forced UO goalkeeper Domenique Lainez to make seven saves...Key made three saves for California...the Golden Bears scoring is spread out with 10 players recording at least one goal...five players have two goals, two have three goals...senior, Kimberly Yokers, a 2002 first-team All-Pac-10 selection has three goals and two assists this season...Yokers also has a .522 shot-on-goal percentage...freshman goalkeeper Anna Key is 5-5-1, has allowed 1.06 goals per game...California returns 18 letter winners and eight starters from their 2002 (12-8-1) squad...California leads the series 8-3-2 with Washington State.

Scouting the Cardinal: Stanford is 3-2-1 in Pac-10 matches, splitting with UO and OSU last weekend...the Cardinal's beat Oregon 3-1 Oct. 24...Cardinal leading scorer, Allyson Marquand had the game-winning goal and assisted the second Cardinal goal in the match...Marquand has seven goals and two assists this season... Stanford outshot the Ducks 18-7, forcing five saves by Oregon's goalkeeper...Stanford lost to OSU 1-0 despite outshooting the Beavers 19-7...Oregon State's goalkeeper made eight saves...Cardinal All-American goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart made one...Stanford tied conference leader No. 3 UCLA on Oct. 17 0-0...the Cardinal post a 1.13 goals per game average...they have 20 goals this season...Barnhart boasts a .80 goals allowed per game average and .781 saves per game...Stanford finished first in the Pac-10, losing in the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2002...the Cardinal's return 19 letter winners and seven starters from their first 2002 squad...WSU lost 1-0 to Stanford last season...the Cardinal lead the series 11-1.

Last Week's Recap: The Cougars fell to No. 22 Washington 2-0 Oct. 25 at Seattle...WSU is 1-3-1 in the Pac-10, the Huskies moved to 2-2-1.

UW scored at the 10:02 mark from a corner kick opportunity...Kim Taylor scored the game-winner...it was her second of the season...senior defender Mariette Boyce was called with a foul inside the Cougar's penalty box...Liz Taylor finished the penalty kick for UW three minutes before the end of the first half...Washington outshot WSU 17-14...three Cougs' recorded three shots, Rachel Rodrick, Nicole Wilcox and Megan Cecchini...Katie Hultin made seven saves, five in the second half for Washington State...WSU has 13 goals in the season, averaging .9 goals per game.. Potter had this to say about the match, "I was pleased with our first half performance, but we needed to capitalize on our opportunities in front of the goal. We are all disappointed in the manner in which we gave up the goals, especially because we had addressed their threats from set pieces.

"The penalty kick; I thought it was an outstanding tackle from Mariette (Boyce) and having seen it on tape, it's disappointing that officiating affected a good game just before the half, but it happens.

"Needless to say, it is hard to get back into the game after going down 2-0 against a quality team like Washington .Despite trying to fight to find an opening, Washington played well enough to kill the game."

Katie Hultin Coming Up Strong For WSU: Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Katie Hultin has made 54 saves in 14 matches...boasting a .818 save average...she has allowed an average of .91 goals per game...allowing 12 goals...she is 5-7-0, with six shutouts...in 2002 Hultin played in six matches making 13 saves...she allowed seven goals with a 1.72 goals against average.

Will WSU Repeat In Upsetting California?: WSU has upset California teams ranked higher than the Cougars in 2001 and 2002...in 2001 then No. 19 California lost to the Cougs 2-0 at Berkeley...Kim Morgan scored the game-winning goal in WSU's 2-0, 2002 victory over the then No. 11 Golden Bears...Shelby Brownfield scored the second goal for the Cougars to seal the win...12 WSU players were members of the 2001 squad, 20 were on the 2002 team...California is currently ranked higher than Washington State in the Pac-10.

Rachel Rodrick Moving Up The Record Books: Senior forward Rachel Rodrick has taken over the third place spot in WSU's career goals list with 23...tied for third in career points with 59...she is tied for fifth in career assists with 13...Rodrick needs just two more assists to move into third in assists...with her performance against Oregon, Rodrick took over third place in career multiple-goal matches with five...adding three game-winning goals to her record moves Rodrick into the career-game-winning goals category with four.
