PULLMAN, Wash. - An American national championship and a pair of Cougar freshmen participating in a Canadian National team camp highlighted Washington State University women's soccer during the summer.
Sophomore defender Shannon McFadden was a member of the Camarillo (Calif.) Eagles team that captured a U-23 national championship. In the championship match, McFadden thwarted a breakaway and helped her team post a 2-1 victory.
Redshirt-freshman Kayla Johnson played for the Sereno White U-18 team that won the Arizona State Cup and advanced to the Region IV quarterfinal round. Senior defender Ashley Johnson and sophomore goalkeeper Ariana Byrd captured the Arizona State Cup with Phoenix del Sol and advanced to the Region IV tournament.
A quartet of Cougars, sophomore defender Mariah Cameron, freshman forward Micaela Castain, freshman midfielder Morgan Castain and freshman midfielder Eileen Maes, combined to lead the Cal North South Alameda County Northstars to a regional title in the U-19 division.
Freshman midfielder/forward Roslyn Pontius was a member of the NorCal State Cup champion De Anza Force that advanced to the Region IV semifinal round.
Junior forward Tiara Pittman and junior defender Ali Fenter were co-captains for the Spokane Black Widows semipro team and redshirt-sophomore midfielder Megan Murphy played for the Kalamazoo (Mich.) Outrage semipro squad.
