PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State University officials announced Wednesday afternoon that the Cougars' home football game Saturday against the Colorado Buffaloes will be played, with the kickoff set for 12:40 p.m. at Martin Stadium. The game will be televised by FOX Sports Net.
"We are mindful of the great tragedy which has befallen our nation," said WSU President V. Lane Rawlins. "We pay our respect and shall not forget those who died or were injured by the terrorists' actions. These acts will have a permanent impact on our nation. However, it is also important that we not be defeated by them and that we move on with our lives and activities. With this in mind, and in keeping with President Bush's wish for the country to return to normal business, I am supportive of playing our football game against the University of Colorado."
"As with other college officials in the country, we have been sorting through the emotional and logistical issues of playing Saturday," said WSU Athletic Director Jim Sterk in making the announcement Wednesday afternoon.
"Colorado has indicated they have the ability to play here Saturday and in discussions with President Rawlins, we have decided to play the game as scheduled," Sterk said.
Cougar head football coach Mike Price supported the WSU decision. "I am in agreement with the decision made by President Rawlins and Jim Sterk," Price commented. "Our players have been very solid in their desire to play the game as well."
The WSU Cross Country Invitational will also be conducted Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on the WSU Golf Course. Teams from Idaho and Eastern Washington will join the Cougars in men's and women's competition. Gonzaga runners were also slated to compete in the meet, but Bulldog officials have indicated to WSU their teams will not be competing this week.
WSU officials also announced the women's golf team will not travel to the Lady Northern Invitational Tournament Saturday and Sunday at Minnesota. In addition, Cal Poly officials informed WSU their team would not be traveling to Pullman for a non-conference soccer match Friday. The WSU soccer match with Idaho State will be played as scheduled, Sunday at noon.
As previously announced, all Pacific-10 Conference intra-league volleyball matches have been cancelled, including the WSU-Washington match originally set for Friday at WSU.
WSU's 1981 Holiday Bowl team will be honored at Saturday's football game, although the barbecue originally scheduled for Friday afternoon has been cancelled.
Also cancelled is the Bohler Gym re-dedication ceremony, originally scheduled for Saturday morning. Bohler Gym, originally built in 1928, underwent a complete renovation that began three years ago and was completed last fall. The event will be re-scheduled when members of the J. Fred Bohler family can attend the dedication.
