PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University safety Chima Nwachukwu has been named to the ESPN The Magazine 2009 Academic All-America Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced this week.

Nwachukwu is the first Cougar to receive Academic All-America honors since 2005, when tight end Troy Bienemann also received second team honors.

Nwachukwu was a first-team honoree on the CoSIDA All-Academic District VIII Team last month, on the strength of his 3.79 GPA as a political science major. A native of Allen, Texas, the junior posted a 4.0 GPA during his sophomore year and serves as WSU's 2009-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president. On the field he has started the first eight games this season before suffering an injury that forced him to miss the following three games. He is hopeful to play in the season-ending Apple Cup Saturday in Seattle. Prior to his injury Nwachukwu led the team in tackles with 56. Additionally, he has intercepted a pass, recovered two fumbles and forced another.

The Pacific-10 Conference placed three individuals on the first two teams, with Wahsington State joining Arizona State and Stanford.
