PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University held its final scrimmage under the lights in Martin Stadium Thursday night. A Jeff Tuel touchdown pass to Isiah Barton highlighted the night as the Cougars went "live" for 54 plays that lasted for just under an hour.
Head coach Paul Wulff had the Cougars go through a full game day walk-thru. Simulating everything from the team doing the cougar pride walk, to pregame stretching, to heading back to the locker room after warmups, to taking the field to entrance music. The team went through full kickoffs after each scoring drive and also assessed penalties (one holding call negated a Tuel to Jared Karstetter touchdown pass).
The No. 1 offense played three series against the No. 2 defense while the No. 1 defense went three series against the No. 2 offense. Tuel went 4-for-9 for 63 yards with the 21-yard touchdown pass to Barton on the final series. Running backs Rickey Galvin had one rush for 22 yards, Carl Winston had three carries for 20 yards and Logwone Mitz added a pair of carries for six yards. The wideouts were led by Marquess Wilson's three grabs for 42 yards and Dominique Williams' two catches for 46 yards.
The defense blocked a pair of field goals and registered two sacks (Mike Ledgerwood and Logan Mayes) while defensive tackle Toni Pole blew through the offensive line and swallowed up running back Marcus Mason that brought some yells from the defense.
Andrew Furney connected from 27 yards out for the night's only field goal.
The Cougars will practice tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. Saturday before taking Sunday off. Monday will see WSU begin preparations for its season opener against Idaho State University Sept. 3.
