PULLMAN, Wash. -- Eight members of the Washington State University Cougar football team have been named to the Pacific-10 Conference academic team, according to conference commissioner Tom Hanson.
WSU's list of honorees included four first-team selections, linebackers Steve Gleason, Grady Emmerson and Serign Marong, plus placekicker Rian Lindell. Both Gleason and Emmerson were picked for the second straight year.
Marong boasts the best grade point average of the eight Cougars. His 3.61 GPA in biology topped all 11 defensive players named to the Pac-10 team and ranked fourth among all players named to the league team. Marong, a sophomore, is from Pullman, Wash.
Gleason, WSU's leading tackler this year with 98, has posted a 3.20 GPA in management information systems. The senior co-captain led the league in total tackles through the first nine games, but was injured early in the USC contest and saw very brief action against Washington. Ninth on WSU's career tackle list with 282 tackles, Gleason is from Spokane, Wash.
Emmerson, a walkon player five years ago, boasts a 3.29 GPA in math education. He has been a mainstay on WSU's linebacker corps the past two years and this year has started nine games. Last Saturday he made 12 tackles against Washington, his best performance this season. Emmerson is from Kennewick, Wash.
Lindell as had a turn-around season and now ranks fourth in career scoring at WSU and is the third most prolific kick scorer ever for the Cougars. This season the senior from Vancouver has hit nine of his 13 field goals, including a long of 52 yards. He has made 46 straight extra point kicks and in his career has made 109-of-112 PATs.
Washington State, along with USC, Stanford and Oregon each placed four players on the first team to lead all teams.
