NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In the first tournament of the 2004-05 season, senior Kim Welch finished in second place at the University of Notre Dame Women's Invitational, Sept. 5. Welch finished tied for second place by shooting 221 (+5) over three rounds. Heading into the final round Welch was only one stroke back of the leader, but she failed to make a move to the top of the leader board with a final round 76. Led by Welch, a two-time All-American, the Cougars finished in second place as a team, five strokes behind winning team Iowa State University and seven strokes ahead of third place and host team Notre Dame. "We played really well," said Head Coach Walt Williams. "We played solid all the way around." Welch was not the only Cougar to finish in the top 10. With a three-round total of 226 (+10), Ana Kostina finished in sixth place. Rounding out the scoring for the Cougars, Maria Kostina and Jay-Lee Longbottom both tied for 12th place shooting 230 (+14). When asked if this was how he expected his team to finish, Williams said, "I didn't know what to expect. I knew Kim would play well. I'm excited to see the other kids play well also."
