WSU Women Tied For Sixth In Competitive Field At Bruin Classic

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The Washington State women's golf team is tied for sixth after one round of the Bruin Classic at the Par-72, 6,270 yard Robinson Ranch Golf Course at Santa Clarita, Calif., Monday.

Kim Welch led the Cougars with a tie for eighth after one round at 2-over (74). Welch was joined with Top 25 efforts by Jay-Lee Longbottom (T14, +3) and Maria Kostina (T23, +4), followed by a tie for 81st by Katharine Dorris (+13) and a tie at 91st by Stephanie Parlsey (+16).

Washington State shot a round of 310 (+22), tying for sixth with perennial Pac-10 powers UCLA and Stanford. California leads the end of the first day at 8-over (296).

The squad is going up against a very competitive 20-team field that Head Coach Walt Williams says, "will help determine who gets into Regional competition, and who doesn't."

The Cougars look to build on their first round success tomorrow starting at 8:30 in the morning for the second round of the 2003 Bruin Classic.
