PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State Cougars volleyball team defeated Montana State 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-12, at the Nike Cougar Invitational tournament in Bohler Gym Saturday afternoon.

Washington State (2-0) senior Jackie Albright (Lake Forest, Calif.) led the match with 15 kills and contributed 16 digs. Brittany Tillman (Lakewood) had 11 kills (.304) and Cassie Robbins (Yakima) added 10 kills (.391), two aces and a match-high five blocks. Senior setter Renee Bordelon (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) had 40 assists and four blocks. Freshman Ocean Bush contributed 17 digs.

Montana State (0-2) was led by the 10 kills from Rachelle Allen. Bobcats setter Taylor Faught had 35 assists and Meghan Albiston led the match with 22 digs. Kyla Hendry had four blocks.

In the first set, the Bobcats kept the score close as the Cougars utilized a lineup with Bush playing the libero position and redshirt freshman Tangerine Wiggs at outside hitter. WSU hit .310 with Albright and Robbins each getting three kills. Kylie Edinger had five kills for Montana State.

Montana State kept the momentum rolling in the second set, controlling the action and racing to a 20-18 lead before winning 25-21. Allen had five kills for the Bobcats while Robbins had six kills in this set for the Cougs.

WSU played more aggressively in the third set and raced out to an early lead and the sustained the margin for the 25-18 win. Cougar outside hitter Meagan Ganzer (Black Diamond), a starter last season, made her season debut in the third set after sitting out the season-opener because of an ankle sprain. Albright had five kills and Tillman had four kills and hit .667 in this set.

The Cougars displayed a much more efficient offense in the fourth set, hitting a match-high .378 and played well defensively, holding MSU to a .071 hitting percentage. WSU takes this set 25-12 and the match, 3-1.

In the morning match, UC Davis defeated Portland 3-0 with set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-23. UC Davis (1-1) was led by Allison Whitson's 12 kills and Betsy Sedlak's seven blocks. Carson Lowden had 27 assists and Kayla Varney added nine kills and nine digs. Portland (1-1) hit only .069 for the match. Jessica Clemens and Maria Clemens each had eight kills and Jessica led the Pilots with 12 digs. Kaylyn Jones had 19 assists and Marissa Plummer tallied six blocks.

The Saturday Nike Cougar Invitational tournament concludes with Montana State taking on UC Davis (4:30 p.m.), and WSU hosting Portland (7 p.m.). All matches are in Bohler Gym and there is no charge to attend.
