VARESE, Italy – Washington State University rowers Mickey Aylard (Canada), Mihaela-Teodora Berindei (Romania), and Nicole Hare (Canada) will compete with their respective countries at the 2014 Under 23 World Rowing Championships at Varese, Italy, July 23-27.
Hare (Calgary, Alberta) and Aylard (Victoria, B.C.), will row together as members of the Canadian women’s four crew. The two will compete against Berindei (Cimpeni, Romania), who is rowing with the Romanian women’s four, as the two countries will meet in the first heat of the event, Wednesday, July 23 at 3 p.m. local time, 6 a.m. PT.
A 2014 All-Pac-12 honoree, Hare will compete with Canada in the U23 Championships for the second-straight year after placing fifth as a member of the women’s eight last season. Hare is entering her junior season at Washington State, having rowed in the varsity eight boat each of her two seasons with the Cougars. A rising-sophomore, Berindei also competed in last year’s championships, capturing a gold medal for Romania in the women’s quadruple sculls. She rowed with the Cougar varsity eight crew during her freshman year in 2014. A rising-senior, Aylard is competing in the U23 Championships for the first time, having rowed in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four boats, respectively, each of her three years at WSU.
The Canadian and Romanian crews will face the Netherlands, Ukraine and Russia in the first heat of the event. The top two crews will advance to final, where it will face the top two from Heat 2, which features Germany, France, New Zealand, the United States and Italy. The Final will take place, Saturday, July 26 at 5:36 a.m. PT. The remaining six crews will face off in the Repechage, July 24 at 9 a.m. PT, for a chance to move on to the Final.
