SECAUCUS, N.J. – Washington State junior outfielder Yale Rosen was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 11th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Saturday. He was the 327th player taken overall.

He was the first of four Cougars to be drafted, Saturday. The Houston Astros selected Nick Tanielu in the 14th round followed by Tanner Chleborad to the Baltimore Orioles in the 16th round and Collin Slaybaugh becoming property of the New York Yankees in the 26th round.

Rosen was the only Cougar to start all 54 games for Washington State in 2014. He batted .294 with 13 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 28 RBI. His round trippers are tied for eighth in the Pac-12.

“Before I left Pullman at the end of the season, I talked with the (WSU) coaching staff about my intentions to start my professional career,” Rosen said. “I had a chance to work out for the Padres in San Diego a couple of days ago and there are some really good people in the organization. I am going to have an opportunity to play in Eugene, Ore., in the Northwest League, so this is a very exciting time.”

A native of Oak Harbor, Wash., Rosen led the Cougars in slugging percentage each of the last two years. His 63 RBI combined in 2013-14 was top at Washington State.

Rosen is the eighth Cougar all-time to be drafted by the Padres and the first in 21 years. He joins pitcher Joe McIntosh (13th round, 1973), pitcher Bob Sherwood (25th round, 1977), second baseman Dan Wodrich (35th round, 1980), shortstop Paul Noce (14th round, 1981), pitcher Marty Kain (22nd round, 1981), pitcher Mike Costello (10th round, 1984) and pitcher Mark Hendrickson (21st round, 1993). McIntosh reached the big leagues with San Diego while Noce and Hendrickson each made their MLB debut with another club.
