BEAVERTON, Ore. – Cara Wegner’s goal earned Washington State a 1-0 victory over Portland in women’s spring soccer, April 19.
Wegner’s goal came off a set piece. Portland briefly cleared a ball in the box, but the Cougars sent it right back in to put the Pilots’ under pressure. Wegner’s header was well placed and beat Portland’s goalkeeper.
“Two teams played really good soccer and we got the end of a chance,” Cougar Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “Playing Portland brings out the best in our kids and they were motivated for a lot of reasons.”
Defensively, the Cougars limited the Pilots to a pair of dangerous chances. Offensively, Washington State pressed Portland’s goalkeeper into duty several times.
“I am not looking forward to the spring ending,” Nugent said. “I wish we had another month. I like the work rate of our players. Now the discipline and the commitment to success of our team will shine through as we head into the offseason after our match with the Sounders.”
The Cougars battle the Sounders in Seattle at 2 p.m., Sunday.
