Roberts Runs School Record 5k at Stanford Invite

STANFORD, Calif. -- Washington State senior distance specialist Ruby Roberts added another school record to her resume Friday night during the Distance Carnival at the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Roberts, from Kingston, Wash., ran the 5000m in a lifetime-best time of 16-minutes, 9.02 seconds for 10th place in the women’s Section 2. Roberts shattered the previous record of 16:14.55 run by Anna Blue at the 2003 Stanford Invitational. Earlier this year Roberts ran the school record in the 3000m (9:15.79), and she is also in the top 10 in WSU’s all-time records in the mile, the 1500m and the 3000m steeplechase.

Also in the Friday night Distance Carnival races, Drew Jordan (senior, Medford, Ore.) ran a PR time in the men’s 5000m Section 1 race, finishing 15th. Jordan’s time of 13:52.40 took nearly seven seconds off his previous lifetime-best.

Thane Pierson high jumped 6-feet 9 inches (2.06m) to win the men’s title with teammates Grant Schultz clearing 6-7 (2.01m) to tie for fourth and Cole Smith over the bar at 6-5 (1.96m) to tie for 10th.

CJ Allen finished fourth in the men’s 400m hurdles in a time of 52.81 while Rashaun Johnson’s time of 54.53 was 15th.

André McBride finished seventh in the men’s 100m dash running a time of 10.77 seconds after a prelim time of 10.80. Also in the prelims, Alex Olobia’s 11.21 was 30th and Brandon Bobb’s 11.28 was 33rd. Sprinters Terrance Chambers ran the 400m a time of 49.80 (33rd) and Daquon Brunson ran a time of 50.25 (35th).

In the 1500m, Lee George ran a time of 3:52.41 or seventh in Section 6 while Andrew Gonzales’ 3:53.80 was fourth in Section 7.

In the evening sections, Andrew Kimpel ran in 5000m the 14:12.75 for 11th in Section 2. In the earlier sections, John Whelan ran the 5000m in a time of 4:17.80 for sixth and Forrest Shaffer’s time of 14:22.75 was ninth in Section 4.

Two Cougar men advanced to the 110m hurdles final as Josiah Sims ran a prelim time of 14.52, fifth-fastest overall, and Daniel Zmuda ran a time of 14.70 to be the ninth and final qualifier for the Saturday final.

In the women’s sprints, Holly DeHart’s 100m time of 12.50 was 20th while in the 400m, Bria’una Watley’s time of 57.24 was 25th and Mimi Brown’s time of 57.67 was 30th.

Liz Harper ran the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.84 for 17th and Andrea Smith ran a time of 15.36 for 28th. Later in the day Harper ran a PR time in the 400m hurdles of 1:02.80 for 20th place.

In field events, Katie Dean long jumped 17-11 3/4 (5.48m) for third in the Women’s Collegiate section while Audrey Ketcham high jumped 5-3 (1.60m) to tie at 11th. Mitch O’Donnell long jumped 20-6 1/2 (6.26m) for 12th in the Men’s Collegiate section.

WSU track and field participants will be competing Saturday at the second day of the Stanford Invitational, and at the Sam Adams Classic at Whitworth University in Spokane.
